About the project
The Expo 2020 Dubai companion app was designed to guide hundreds of thousands of global visitors through one of the most ambitious World Expos ever held. Spanning 4.38 km² across three thematic districts — Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability — the app delivered real-time event schedules, pavilion discovery, smart venue navigation, ticketing integration, and personalised itinerary planning for guests representing 192 participating nations.
The Challenge
Serving a massive, multi-lingual audience at a single venue with peak concurrent loads of tens of thousands of users demanded an architecture that could absorb extreme traffic spikes without degradation. Offline reliability was equally critical — inconsistent site connectivity could not be allowed to break the visitor experience. Wayfinding across a 4+ km² site with 200+ attractions added further complexity.
Our Solution
We built an offline-first architecture with aggressive content caching for maps, schedules, and pavilion guides. A geofencing engine detected a visitor's real-time location across the site and surfaced contextually relevant events and nearby attractions. A personalised itinerary builder let guests plan based on declared interests, while live capacity alerts helped distribute crowds intelligently across the three districts.
